Finding Superdrug’s future customers, today

Everyone’s heard of Superdrug, right?

It’s certainly been a staple part of my shopping experience since I was in my teens – from Collection 2000 and Exclamation body spray in year 9 to miniature perfumes and Oxy cleanser in year 10.

So here’s the thing, what about the people who are too young to have really heard about Superdrug yet? What if I could get to them, before say, Boots did?

Then I would be creating a loyal breed of consumers, just ready and waiting to shop ’til they dropped…

And so that’s what I decided to do.

RAISING MONEY

Calling on four of the fabbest girls I know – the ‘Fab Four’ – I invited them, and a host of other people, to a Superdrugloves.com Blog Benefit Sale in aid of UNICEF’s Pakistan flood relief fund

I’ve been trying to think up a way to raise money for Pakistan since the flooding happened and UNICEF’s appeal really struck a chord with me as it looks after children, who often cannot look after themselves. I thought if we could make the even the tiniest difference, then that had to be better than nothing, right?

And now, about the girls – all gorgeous, and all beginners with the concept of make-up, facemasks and other such girly things. And quite rightly so, because they’re all under 12.

However, there’s nothing to say that in applying make-up they have to end up looking like baby beauty queens. I wanted them to explore, have fun, spray things, spritz things, paint things and
enjoy themselves so that when they are finally old enough to think about make-up and beauty stuff seriously, they’ll think of Superdrug.

So, let’s get to it shall we.

THE SALE

Included in the sale were all the fabulous goodies sent to me in my last brown paper package tied up with string, minus the shampoos and conditioners from the Scandalous range because, honestly, I was desperate to try them out myself – a review of which will feature later this week.

Also included in the sale, was a collection of things from Superdrug that I had stored carefully after the initial testing, plus a few little bits and bobs I’d bought for the occasion.

And, just so I could keep track of everything, and also find out a little bit about my consumers, everyone had to fill in a questionnaire relating to Superdrug and the sale.

LONDON COUSIN 1

First up, was London Cousin 1. She’s 10 and on the Superdrug Blog Benefit Questionnaire listed her staple beauty brands as TRESemmé and Pantene. She pounced on the Barry M Emerald Green nail polish, listing her reason for buying it as, ‘I loved the vibrant green – it’s so cool!’

LONDON COUSIN 2

London Cousin 2, who’s 8, has never shopped at Superdrug, and listed Colgate toothpaste as her beauty staple! Teehee! When she’s older I’m going to teach her how brilliant that is for spots as well as teeth, but in the meantime, she was much too interested in the 2True Glitter Mascara, and a face pack…

MINI BLANCO

Then, there was Mini Blanco – she’s 10 and likes Pantene, but soon declared that she’s moving onto bigger and better things with the Superdrug’s new Scandalous range – she pocketed the Intensively Glossy Rescue Treatment because she loved the smell of it and as her hair was always knotty this might solve the problem. She also enthusiastically got to grips with the Barry M Glitter Lashes (available in store), which she thought was, ‘funky and cool’. She then stumbled across a face mask, which for some reason became her foundation! Perhaps the most enthusiastic of my Superdrug Protégés, this was her finished look!

MIDI BLANCO

And the final member of the Fab Four was Midi Blanco. She was a (shhhh) Natural Collection fan, but I soon changed that! Keen to make sure her money was well spent, she tried out five different nail polishes before choosing the Revlon Nail Enamel in Red Hot Tamale because it looked the smoothest. She also chose the Revlon Va Va Violet Super Lustrous Lipstick because, she said, ‘It looked surprisingly good on me!’ So that’s that then – move over Natural Collection, Revlon’s here!

Honestly, my four Superdrug protégés took to the task with more enthusiasm than I could ever have imagined. They backcombed and set their hair in place with Scandalous Flaunt It Firm Hold Hair Spray, they applied face masks and eye shadow and bright red lipsticks with glee, and they discovered the art of applying mascara and nail polish with care so that it didn’t go everywhere – well almost everywhere.

SPREADING THE WORD

And then, they declared, they wanted to take the campaign to the streets. Spread the word about Deafinitely Girly and Superdrug, and show off their new looks.

And so, we did.

Armed with my advertising board, and with Maxi Blanco filming, we hit the main road near the sale venue and what fun the Fab Four had.

‘Shop at Superdrug,’ they told passers-by, grinning with enthusiasm. At one point they actually stopped traffic, which they then used as an opportunity to spread the word even more.

It was amazing. I had succeeded in finding Superdrug’s future customers today, and I had raised a total of £75 for UNICEF!

And, so long as Superdrug has plenty of hair spray, glittery things and nail polish, these four are going to be very happy customers!

Look out Superdrug, they’re on their way…

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

*Special thanks go to London Aunt, Mrs Blanco, Riddles of Mind and Danish Pastry for their amazing enthusiasm on the day, too! Mainly Clarins fans, I had them ooohing and aahing at the new Scandalous Haircare range, fighting over GOSH Velvet Touch Foundation Primer, Superdrug Mango & Papaya Body Polish,  and Superdrug Cocoa Butter Body Butter, and enthusing about T-Zone’s Instant Action Spot Zapping Stick and Instant Fix 6 Nose Strips, the latter of which, I’m afraid I won the fight for, as I had been wanting to try them for ages! And of course, let’s not forget the wonderful Maxi Blanco who was a brilliant help – she’s 14, and went away with the biggest beauty bag out of everyone. Originally an ‘occasional’ shopper at Superdrug, she’s now a fan of the 2True make-up range, the Scandalous Haircare range and the Vitamin E Illuminating Cream.

DG’s Beauty Awards 2010

1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars (29 votes, average: 4.14 out of 5)
Loading ... Loading ...

Welcome to Deafinitely Girly’s first ever Beauty Awards!

When I started on this journey with Superdrug over one year ago, I never imagined I would get to try out so many fantastic products, have so many amazing experiences and meet (cyberly) so many fantastic people.

But now, with a year of trying things under my belt, of going back to products I trialled for a week and trying them again, and of consistent usage of some things, what products have made the cut in DG’s Beauty Awards?

HAIRCARE

Best Shampoo: John Frieda Go Blonder, £4.79 (3 for £10)  I loved this shampoo. It made my hair feel glossy and brighter and I had plenty of compliments when using it, too.

Best Conditioner: John Frieda Go Blonder £4.79 (3 for £10)  This conditioner was the perfect partner to the shampoo and I like them both so much I have treated myself to the miniature versions so that I can use them even when I am away.

Both Go Blonder products were written about HERE

Best Styling Product: GOSH Salt Of Mine Wet ‘N Dry Saltwater Spray, £4.39, available in store This fab product gives you that beach-babe look without having to set foot in the sea! Great for festival chic, this has been a summer staple of mine, and it’s particularly useful for rescuing me from those bad hair days.

DG’s Special Award: Batiste Dry Shampoo, £2.09 A must after the gym or just for reviving tired hair before a night out. The entire range smells great and my brunette friends love the coloured version, too. I first wrote about it HERE

SKINCARE

Best Facial Moisturiser: L’Oreal Youth Code REJUVENATING ANTI-WRINKLE DAY CREAM, £9.99 First written about HERE, this is now a beauty cupboard staple for me – having used it constantly since Superdrug sent it to me first time around, I love the way it keeps my skin soft but doesn’t clog it and lead to breakouts.

Best Cleanser: L’Oreal Perfect Clean Refreshing Foaming Gel Wash, £3.99 I am actually on my second bottle of this amazing face wash. I was sceptical about the ‘scrublet’ at first, thinking it was a gimmick, but it really does leave your face feeling super clean but without that tight, dryness often associated with face washes. See what I originally thought, HERE!

BODYCARE

Best Moisturiser: Nivea Body Good-Bye Cellulite Smoothing Gel-Cream, £9.99 I will love my legs! That is my daily mantra, and has been since I originally wrote about this cream HERE. Nivea Good-Bye Cellulite makes it much easier for me to do just that!

Best Fake Tan: Sublime Bronze Pro Spray 150ML Light, £10.99 Not a sun worshipper, this saves the day and prevents people from exclaiming, ‘Oooh, well you can’t have been on holiday this summer, can you?’ while eyeing up my English rose complexion!

DG’s Bargain Choice: Into Glamour Impulse fragrance, £1.79 My blast from the past, first reviewed HERE, I keep a can of this in my gym bag and desk drawer for those erm… ‘smell nice’ emergencies!

NAILCARE

Best Nail Polish: 2true range, £1.95 each or 3 for £5 At 3 for £5 what’s not to love. Colour goes on evenly and stays on. A great-value product with professional results. See my original chatter about 2true HERE

Best Nail Polish Remover: Bourjois Gentle Nail Enamel Remover – available in store I got this last year from London Fashion Week – and originally wrote about it HERE. I love this product and have actually just run out, so it’s on my next Superdrug Shopping List. It literally causes nail polish to vanish and doesn’t leave nails chalky white as other brands can.

MAKE-UP

Best Foundation: Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation, £9.99 In a nutshell, this smells great, looks great and gets me lots of compliments! See it in action HERE!

Best Bronzer: Bourjois Bronzing Powder, £6.99 All of the above and ideal of chocolate fans

Best Blusher: Bourjois Pastel Joues Blusher, £6.99 Another winner from Bourjois, this is the perfect finishing touch to the foundation and bronzer.

Best Eye Shadow: Revlon Colorstay 12 Hour Eye Shadow Quad Sultry Smoke, £7.99 This fabulous shadow kit allows the creation of numerous looks and can be blended, shaded, used as a liner or mixed and matched with other Revlon Shades – a truly versatile addition to the make-up bag that was first reviewed HERE!

Best Mascara: L’Oreal’s new Volume Million Lashes, £10.99 Honestly, when I first wrote about this mascara, HERE, I was not overly impressed. But, it’s living proof that first impressions should not always be the only ones. Having gone back to this, it’s now my favourite mascara of the moment.

Best Lipgloss/stick: L’Oreal Glam Shine in Sheer Cassis, £6.99 OK, so I will never look like Cheryl Cole, but I can try with this non-sticky yummy purse-sized gloss! See it on me, HERE!

DG’s Special Award: 2True Make-up range – for brilliant choice and up-to-date trends at budget-friendly prices. Love it all! Want it all! Have possibly bought it all!

Best External Brand at Superdrug: L’Oreal Throughout my time at Superdrug, new L’Oreal products have continued to impress me. I’m excited to see what’s next for this company…

And that’s it for my yearly review! It’s been an amazing journey so far… thank you Superdrug.

The four non blondes

1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars (18 votes, average: 3.89 out of 5)
Loading ... Loading ...

It was very interesting receiving this weeks challenge…..brunettes versus blondes (who really does have the most fun) as I recently read a survey on the subject.  The results were very interesting.

1) Blondes may have more fun  -  but it comes at a price. Men don’t trust them.

2) A study found that while fair-haired women are considered to be the most adventurous in bed, brunettes are seen as more reliable in a relationship … and more sexy.

3) In a poll of 1,500 men, more than 60 per cent thought dark-haired girls were the most trustworthy and loyal, compared with just 14 per cent of blondes.

4) The result is men feel brunettes make the best wives.

As a brunette, I can definitely say I’ve had my fair share of fun! I can’t remember any rivalry with Blondes, and never ever wished to be blonde.  I love my hair, it really is my crown and glory. There are so many stereotypical perceptions of blondes, blonde jokes, lack of intelligence etc, so I thought it was only fair I put this to the test myself, and conduct my own research…in Edinburgh!

four non blondes

four non blondes

Me and my girlfriends, Bal, Sang and Narry all brunettes I hasten to add were on our latest SATC jaunt, all armed with this weeks task…to find out whether men think Blondes or Brunettes have more fun!  We also wanted to know their favourite Brunette!

We started off early…and the first chap I cornered was at the security guy at Birmingham Airport.  He said definitely brunettes, and his fave was Kim Kardashian (which he said I resembled…creep!)

In Edinburgh we hung out in the Royal Mile, and the first bunch of lads we spoke to, were on a stag weekend.  No surprise here…but the consensus was blondes, however they kept saying that they would end up with a brunette, there were some other comments (unfortunately its not printable!)

One thing I certainly noticed, this research was a real ice breaker…I couldn’t believe how many men loved being part of the survey.  I wondered, as there was four hot chicks asking the questions…whether that really had any bearings on the end result…?

The results at the end of the night were not surprising…BRUNETTES definitely have MORE fun…well at least the men of Edinburgh seem to think so!

Poll Results:

Brunettes 57%

Blondes 38%

Red Heads 2%

Ginger 1% (erm…)

Bold 1% (why?)

Grey 1% (interesting…gives me hope for 20 years time!)

Top Brunettes in no order were:

Kim Kardashian (someone said I resembled)

Angelina Jolie

Kristin Steward

Cheryl Cole (although someone mentioned they think she looks like a lollipop)

Kelly Brooke

Katy Perry

Lilly Allen

Freido Pinto

Beyonce

Fergie

Megan Fox

Mud, music and make up. Festivals for the fabulous.

1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars (23 votes, average: 3.91 out of 5)
Loading ... Loading ...
No that isn’t actually me but I have done this whole Festival thing before…

Summer is finally here and for many of us that means one thing, festival season is well and truly upon is!

First you have to choose the festival for you from the hundreds on offer, check out the links for these amazing line ups of both big well known UK and abroad music festivals and local fun festivals in an area near you.  Whether it’s Glastonbury or Rug Fest in Wallingford you still need to be prepared, it doesn’t have to be all dirt, sweat and grubby loos this year so stand out from the crowd by looking fresh, feeling  fresh.

So here is the BeautyH2T guide on how to take the minimum to get the maximum out of the experience and be a  happy glamper(that’s glamerous camper, see what I did there…!) in 2010.

 THE FASHION

  •  Make sure you pack clothes that you can layer on. Knowing our lovely UK weather it can change in a heartbeat so you want to be able to cover up and shed it off easily! Think loose vest tops, band t shirts, waistcoats, the worlds your oyster when it comes to festival fashion.
  •  Denim shorts are a must for working your way around a busy  field of tents and in the huge crowds. Perfect for matching with any top, and if it’s cold they look just as great with tights on underneath!
  • Long necklaces give that relaxed boho look and will compliment your arm full of wristbands!
  • A good hat like this straw trilby will keep you cool whilst looking cool, and also cover days of unwashed hair underneath :)
  • Wellies are a key piece to any festival goers wardrobe, in this year are a twist on the popular biker boot  so it doesnt have to just be tatty old green ones! A pair like this from Next are ideal cheap and chic- Yay!
  • Sunglasses are a must, no point not being able to see the bands play for the sun, and they are great for hiding unslept eyes. Play around with styles and colours, remember anything goes at a festival.

THE MAKEUP+ HAIR

As you know I am a beauty addict so I cant go the whole festival without a little something to brighten up my face and even out my skin tone! You want make up that keeps you looking wide eyed and bushy tailed but is easy to put on in a tiny tent you are sharing with 10 others - 6 of which you didn’t know until you got there!

  •  Waterproof mascara is the ultimate make up tool for the muggy weather and possible rain, and this is my absolute favourite, 1 stroke and you have that false lash effect  in an instant!
  •  A good foundation compact is perfect for being outdoors,  this Sleek Creme to Powder foundation comes with a mirror and applicator and is perfect for beauty on the go, or why not go for the Max Factor version with a built in SPF 15, gorgeous smooth skin tone whilst keeping sun damage at bay, yes please! For those of you lucky enough to not have to wear foundation just a little dab of under eye concealer or tinted moisturiser will keep you looking gorgeous!
  •  A stroke of blusher will perk tired cheeks up ,and there is nothing more practical for the festival season than these cream blushers from Bloom, no fuss or brush necessary, these little 3 in1 beauties can go on lips, eyes and cheeks so are perfect to pop in your bag.
  • A good lip balm with an spf keeps your lips soft and kissable ( what happens at the festival, stays at the festival!), Nivea Pearl and Shine is perfect for the job giving your lips a nice sheen of colour while still being moisturising and packing SPF 10.
  • Dry shampoo is a MUST! You cannot leave home without it ladies, no matter how long you are going for you will need a little of this to revamp your do and keep it looking fresh… well fresh..er. My tip is to put your newly washed hair into pigtails and rock the indie look for travelling there, then when they are dry you just have to shake them out and voila - amazing boho waves, ( my example is this pic- I wear my hair like this not just at festivals but all the time, it is lazy girl beauty at its finest!) and then you have your dry shampoo to put texture back into your greasy mop for the day that follows, ( and a hat for the day after that!) Batiste now comes in the brunette version too so no white headed worries for all us darker hair ladies, there are even miniature tins which are perfect for lightening the load!

 THE  ESSENTIALS

  • Bin bags are a great thing to pack, use them as clothing, as a seat, as a head covering and well as a bin. A couple of pounds well spent!
  • Along with that think, a mirror, some wet wipes, loo roll, antibacterial hand gel , and hayfever tablets, these are all little live savers that have proved really handy to me in the past and might just prove themselves as essential to you this year.
  • Simple face wipes, will wipe away the days excesses and keep your skin  cool and clean, no water needed so one less trip to those delightful port-a loos. These beauties are so effective but still  gentle on pretty much any skin type!
  • You party hard skin will need some TLC so make sure you pack some moisturiser, sun screen and  of course after sun which might just make you a hero for anyone camping nearby who was less prepared than you and has turned a nice lobster red!
  • deodorant- speaks for itself, even though everyone else may be less than fresh you still can be, even in the middle of a mosh pit.
  • And last but not least some bottles of water and a tube of Berocca will keep your energy up and ready for even more dancing!

Remember you can get loads of these products in travel sizes, more space for food and drink that way :)

Me in the out in the field learning festival tips first hand!

I hope this festival lo -down has taken the pain out of packing and has helped you get ready to get out there and embrace your inner festival goddess and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Look good, smell good, and be bad–  drink, eat and  dance the night away,  go wild and enjoy your amazing festival  experience!

Oh and don’t forget to head on back to superdrugloves.com to tell us all about it.

Happy Glamping everyone!

Bx

PS Keep your eyes peeled for part 2 of my festival posts…

Dancing Queen

1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars (10 votes, average: 2.90 out of 5)

You are the Dancing Queen, young and sweet, only seventeen (ok not quite)
Dancing Queen, feel the beat from the tambourine
You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life
See that girl, watch that scene, digging the Dancing Queen

Dancing Queen

On Friday 3rd July 2009, Warwick Castle played host to an all-singing, all-dancing, musical extravaganza with The Music of ABBA – A Pop Symphonic Spectacular.  Featuring a host of talented stars from the West End smash hit musical Mamma Mia, the show brought to life the Swedish supergroup’s best-loved hits with the backing of a full symphony orchestra.
A picnic in the park, 100’s of people gathered together for the festivities in the most beautiful and picturesque surroundings of the delightful Warwick Castle.  My evening was laid back, and colourful, I was lucky enough to enjoy the experience with my 4 year old daughter, who is a huge Mama Mia movie fan…and knows all the words to the songs, as well as my best friends and their girls.
We were well stocked, with chilled Pimms…really sweetie..cucumber sandwiches (you just have too!) and lots of nibbles and chocolates.  So prepared, we even took our own seating with us, just in case the little ones got tired, after dancing the night away, even a tent with blankets, and candelabra, just to give it that romantic touch!

The orchestra was amazing…wherever you were sat, you could hear the ol’ classic ABBA songs, that really truly got you carried away. The evening was really fun, people were dressed up in 70’s fancy dress, there were a few nervous men (believe me they had to be, with the amount of hormones flying around in the fresh air!)  Each song got everyone wanting more, and more, from toddlers to OAP’s, the event with the atmosphere was truly amazing…its really hard to explain, but I just felt on such an amazing high.
Before the evening finished there was a dramatic fireworks finale.  It was huge, over the grounds of the castle, the evening was so mild, the fireworks just looked spectacular.
One of the best evenings of my life, full of fun, dance and laughter, with the people I love most!

You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life
See that girl, watch that scene, digging the Dancing Queen….that was me!

Day in the life of MissPrincessPancake (darts and hamsters included)

1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars (42 votes, average: 4.62 out of 5)
Loading ... Loading ...

It is 6am on a frightfully cold ‘summer’ morning and I am sat in front of a camcorder and studio lights cramming toast down whilst trying to open various pots of makeup one handed.  Yes, this is my day in the life and I am trying to get myself ready whilst filming a quick makeup tutorial for my YouTube channel.  Apart from nearly spilling my tea all over a new pot of lip balm the recording goes well and I leave it to be edited and uploaded when I return from work.

My next challenge is to remember what I am supposed to be doing today at work, which I may add, is a hard task at 6.30am after a nights munching and quaffing with the girlies.  So off I trundle to school and my class (or I should say family) of 28 5 and 6 year olds for a day of dressing up, number fans, story writing and playing with the class hamster.  By 3.30 I am thoroughly knackered and decide that the only way to truly reward myself for such a mammoth day is to join my best friends down the local pub for a game of darts and some cheesy chips!

Darts champion in the making!

Now, I am in no way the best darts player in the village, but I must say that tonight I played like a true superstar (I have decided this on the basis that I beat my boyfriend which made him huff in disbelief!) I will now be researching into starting a darts career with the intention of meeting Brad Pitt at a celebrity party.  This aside, I decide that I shouldn’t take all the glory so retire home to process and upload my video from earlier this morning.

I HATE COMPUTERS!!!!  Technology has decided to play a cruel game with me once more and for some unknown reason my files will not transfer properly.  After some severe pacing around the garden a very arrogant voice tells me ‘upload complete’ and I quickly get into the swing of responding to YouTube messages from subscribers and Twitter comments.

I manage to squeeze in a spot of cereal and a bath before collapsing into bed to go over the plan for tomorrow and dream of ice cream and those rather delicious butterfly cakes with butter cream in the middle.  Tomorrow is a new day to look forward to, however just as I take my last look at the world I remember that it is in fact Book Week and I must dress up as an alien for school . . . now where did I put my antennas?

…Well, one day of it!

A normal working day for me is a varied one, I work as a coordinator for the BBC in sunny (!) Scotland. I have worked in TV for the past couple of years and on the most part I love it. Not always glamorous the hours can be very long, but there are so many adventures to go on and new things to try, it is usually worth it in the end.

I am lucky that my day does start not as early as some, I don’t start till 9.30..ish and live nearby , so I often don’t drag myself out of bed until 8.45! I like my beauty routine in the morning to be quick and fuss free, I usually dry my hair at night and either tie it up in a messy bun or let it dry in pigtails, so as to give a relaxed and messy do the next day – one that hopefully looks like I meant it to look that way! Make up wise a touch of foundation to even out the ole cheeks, a healthy blob of under eye concealer, a swirl of blusher on the apples, some liquid black liner for the lids and lashings of Mascara is quick and easy to achieve while in a rush and keeps me from scaring the colleagues with morning face!

I really enjoy walking to work, it gives me time to wake up and look silly mouthing the words to whatever song is on my ipod! This walk  is usually fine and pretty uneventful, I just have to wander through a tunnel over the motorway, over a bridge and I am there but not on the day I am considering sharing with the Superdrug world oh no- my usual bridge is looking a little difficult to cross…. A little later to work it is, oooops!

At work my day is usually a mixed bag of events, nothing too exciting is happening currently so I wont bore you. But here is where I sit and here is my lovely building, all open plan and always something random to look at or listen too. Celeb spotting and  munching on delicious tray bakes in the canteen helps pass the time when I should be at my desk getting on with things! ( I promise I do actually work very hard and love most aspects of my job!)

Now in order to make my days seem slightly more glitz and glam I was pretty pleased to be asked  to do this just before a black tie event I had coming up ( I do not get dressed up like this every day!) I finished at Uni a couple of years ago and while I was there I was involved in my Students Union and every year the president of the place is given a big fancy dinner in his honour, cue a few drinkies, fancy clothes and some bad dancing.

I was proud to be asked to attend along with some of our best friends to celebrate our friend Aarons great year in charge. I took the afternoon off work to go home and pamper myself and get ready, I love taking my time for a special night and getting right down to the details. Although it was  dark inside so no one would really notice all this effort!  It was an amazing night and well worth the worth the blisters, the headache and the dress covered in red wine! Needless to say the next day was a lot less productive than this one!

So there you have it,  a snapshot of my life. I hope you enjoyed it and hopefully I will be back  to share  more summer adventures and hear some of yours soon.

Much Love

My names Beautyh2t and I am a beauty a holic and proud!  I love all things beauty, health, hair and skin care which is why I go by the name of beauty head- 2 -toe! So  you can imagine my excitement when the lovely people over at Superdrug got in touch to say  I had gotten to this stage of being a summer insider.  Free makeup showing up in the post you say? I almost knocked over the poor postie grabbing it out of his hands!

I pretty much instantly applied a little of everything in the package and went to work  like a happy little beauty guinea pig, multi coloured nails and all! But for all you Superdrug lovers I thought It best to calm down, try out all the products for a few days and give you the low down on some of the fab products available online and in store this summer.

NYC is a budget friendly line that I have to admit I have never really spent much time looking at before, often just passing by to look at more expensive brands, however it is certainly one I will be going to look at now.  I was lucky enough to receive 5 of their nail varnishes, the 3 on the left here from their ‘In a New York Colour Minute Quick Dry’ range and two from their ‘Long- Wearing’ range and I have to say i was more than impressed! Both sets have a fab long bottle neck which I find means the varnish lasts longer and there is far less waste. The consistency is quite runny which means you can build up the colour to how you want it and you can easily paint the nail in a couple of strokes. I tried out all the colours and it is such a great range for the money, particularly when I found out how amazingly quick drying these really were, they are definitely the easiest applied and best drying nails varnishes I have tried in a long while which equals a happy, manicured me!

In the above shot I am wearing left to right; 139B Plumberry, 247B1 Prince Street, 221B1 Spring Street, 238B1 Moma and on the thumb is the stunning  140B Empire State Blue. I have worn the hot pink one (Moma) now for 4 days and its only now starting to show slight tip wear which is amazing for such a budget brand, I cannot wait to get to my local Superdrug and discover all the other colours!

Handily I was also sent a bottle of  ’Sally Hansen Nail Shine Miracle 10 day Top Coat’ that I needed considering I now plan on painting my nails so many different colours in the coming sunny months, I tried it along with the Empire State blue and it performed amazingly. I am going to use it on my toes too as with the tootsies on show all summer they need to look their best and without having to re apply all the time. It is goes on so easily, dried really fast and gave my nails such a good shine- love it!

Now the other half of my package was all about the eyes, someone out there must have read my mind as right now my major beauty crushes are mascara and nails and I was lucky enough to be sent 3brand new mascaras to test out. Look out lashes, prepare to be glammed up!

Left to right I received:

So after running them all through my fingers for an embarrassing amount of time I set about the one my eye was drawn to first, the gleaming gold packaging of the L’oreal Volume Million Lashes-I am like a magpie when it comes to packaging!  Currently £7.99 in Superdrug I would say this one is  worth the money, the anti clump wiper for the brush ensures the wand coats all the lashes without pulling them together with excess product, a must for beauty on the go in summer time!

This mascara gives the lashes a great fullness and really made my eyes pop and in only one coat, it lasted the whole day and was mess free to apply, all that and it looks good on my dresser- a big thumbs up from me! I then moved on to the other two less expensive Mascaras, not expecting them to live up to the performance of the L’Oreal, but how I was wrong! I have now moved the 2 NYC mascaras right into my daily routine ( yes I will admit I wear 2 mascaras a day- cringe).  For the price of these well packaged sleek beauties they are well worth picking up, both the curling and the lengthening ones do the job perfectly, giving a great natural finish that wore so well over the day. Easy to both apply and remove I found these fab and will work well for you if you are looking for a little extra length to open up your peepers or to curl the lashes for that summer flirty look.

Thanks so much Superdrug for the chance to share my thoughts and for fuelling my beauty obsession, and thank you all for reading, if any one else has used any of these products then let us know which ones you love in the comments below. I Love to hear what everyone else is trying out.

Happy summer everyone,

Bx

New York Color – Beauty for less!

1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars (11 votes, average: 3.82 out of 5)
Loading ... Loading ...

As a big lover of make-up and nail varnishes, I usually ‘invest’ in slightly more expensive products in the assumption they will be a better quality. However, I was quite surprised when I was sent some New York Color (NYC) products by Superdrug to test out (thank-you!), as they were definite value for money.

I first tried the Long-Wearing Nail Enamel in ‘140B- Empire State Blue.’ I thought the colour was really nice, perfect for summer as it shimmered when it caught the light. With a top coat over it, it barely chipped at all over several days. I also combined it with other ’on-trend’ colours and patterns as I love nail art and it looked really cool.

I’m quite fussy with foundations, but the Natural Matte Foundation in ‘003 Cameo’ was nicer than I thought it would be. The colour wasn’t quite suited to my skin (I’m usually the fairest colour) but it was easy to blend and moisturising and and it’s a good price for anyone on a budget.

Being blonde my lashes are quite fair so I always choose black mascara, so I was happy when Superdrug sent me 3 different ones!

My favourite was ‘Sky Rise’ in ‘843 Carbon’. I liked the sleek long packaging and it definitely made my lashes look longer (right eye in the photo).

My second favourite was ‘City Curls’ in ‘845 Black’, as it helped my lashes look more defined but not as long (left eye in the photo – hopefully you can see a slight difference?!). I loved the bright pink packaging though. I didn’t find ‘Show Time’ made much difference to my lashes at all, so I would definitely choose one of the other two to buy.

The eyeshadow I was sent was ‘910 – In Vogue’. I liked the cute packaging and it looked more expensive than it is. At first glance I wasn’t keen on the bright purple colour and it didn’t really suit my complexion on its own. However, blended with a light silver shade, it looked a lot softer and I liked the look.

After trying out these products, I would be much more inclined to look in the NYC make-up section rather than walk right past it! I couldn’t find online links to these products (I think they may be new?) but I saw them in-store the other day so go and have a look!

Get set for summer!

1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars (13 votes, average: 4.62 out of 5)
Loading ... Loading ...

With the days getting warmer and fashions of shorts beckoning, I decided it was time to get summer ready!

Being a low maintainance-ish kind of girl, I wasn’t quite sure where to start. So, a few days ago, I popped to the HUGE Superdrug store in Westfield, London to see what could entice me and make me look fab.

There were lots of products on offer, but my main thoughts were banishing my cellulite (as much as possible anyway), smooth soft skin, and finding some wrinkle stuff so that I could combat all the sunshine squinting damage. And, with 3 for 2 across all skincare, it seemed like a great opportunity to fill up my basket and get set for summer.

But, just doing this once is not enough to be summer ready – people who look good are often dedicated to their skincare routine. However, being a busy bee, and liking my sleep, I challenged myself to fitting my new Set-for-Summer routine into my normal morning to see if I could be summer ready and still be on time for work.

HERE’S HOW I GOT ON:

Stumble blearily into the shower and while the conditioner is on your hair, grab Garnier BodyTonic Sugar Scrub, £6.99, which promises to exfoliate dead skin cells and leaves your skin soft and smooth. It really does, and what’s more, my hands were nice and soft too, from the work out I gave them

.

After showering put toast in the toaster, the kettle on and grab some Nivea Body Good-Bye Cellulite Smoothing Gel-Cream, £9.99, which actually takes longer to say than it does to apply.

.

Sort out those squinting wrinkles with Olay Anti-Wrinkle Classic Deep Wrinkle Treatment, £9.99. Sent to me by Superdrug, this is pecifically designed to combat your more pronounced facial wrinkles – think forehead and eyes – it promises, with daily use to visibly reduce wrinkles and make skin look smoother and younger. Obviously no instant results here, but here’s hoping – I normally like Olay products and it went on easily enough and didn’t feel too heavy!

.

.

Eat toast with one hand,

dry hair with other using usual products.

£12.99, Superdrug

.

Apply usual moisturiser – I am still using L’Oreal Youth Code, see my review here and it’s great.

Superdrug had also sent me L’Oreal’s new Volume Million Lashes, £7.99, in black and I was quite excited about trying it – although unsure whether massive lashes would pass as minimal make-up. It promises no clumps and there’s apparently a built-in Excess Wiper that erm… wipes off the excess.

With minutes to go, I popped it on and…

DISASTER!

My lashes were spidery and clumpy!

Not quite sure how this happened – the description said that the pop when you pull the brush out proves the wiper is working but being deaf, I couldn’t hear a pop.

Spidery clumpy lashes are not a good look, so I grabbed a brow brush and pulled it through my lashes, which took off the excess the Excess Wiper was supposed to but they didn’t look great to tell you the truth.

Anyway, clothes on and ready to go, all that was left was to slick on some L’Oreal Glam Shine in Sheer Cassis, £6.99, (Cheryl’s colour, don’t you know?!).

This non-sticky lip gloss has a heart-shaped wand that made for easy application and while not minimal either, it kind of went with my no-longer-clumpy-but-still-not-fab Volume Million eyelashes!

And then all that was left was to go to work – Summer ready? Erm no, but it’s a good start.

Next stop?

Fake tan I think…

Bring on Barcelona! (my Superdrug prize!)

1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars (10 votes, average: 4.60 out of 5)
Loading ... Loading ...

As the winner of Superdrug’s brilliant competition last summer, I got to go to Barcelona for the weekend in February. And what a weekend it was. In the cold late of day, back in England, it almost feels like it was a dream…

This is perhaps because Barcelona itself, has a dream-like quality about it – a surrealist element, made even more bizarre by having gorgeous Gaudi buildings mingling with every-day architecture and a welcoming bunch of locals that usually only exist in movies.

When On The Beach first emailed to say, ‘Hey, here’s £700 to spend on a weekend in Barcelona courtesy of Superdrug – have fun!’ I literally bounced off the ceiling with excitement. Wasting no time, I went holiday shopping, exploring the site with ease, and soon found ideas for hotels and suitable flights for Barcelona.

Luke at On The Beach was extremely helpful – securing our chosen flights with British Airways and assuring me that the 5* Eurostars BCN Design hotel I had selected on the Paseo de Gracia, was not only an excellent hotel, but in an excellent location, too. And, all this was done on email, not a single phone call was needed, which as a deaf person was brilliant.

So anyway, bags packed with Superdrug miniature toiletries – we took hand baggage only – London Aunt and I set off excited about the weekend ahead. The hotel website illustrated luxurious rooms, decadent décor and a fabulous location and, as a perpetually-poor person, this excited me.

We arrived, three hours late – thank you French Air Traffic Controllers – and found our way effortlessly onto a waiting airport-to-city bus. Five euros later and we were deposited just 5 minutes walk from our hotel at the Plaza Catalunya.

At 11pm on a Friday night, the city was just beginning to wake up, so we were eager to get checked in and then check out Barcelona. The staff were friendly and helpful and the entrance hall of the hotel, entrancing. They gave us our room key and we skipped upstairs eagerly awaiting our luxurious 5* room.

Erm…

Yes, well it would seem they’d checked us in to the one room that wasn’t fabulous – and seeing as the rate on rooms was a flat one, I marched straight back downstairs and politely asked where my nice room with a bath in the middle of it was…

…only to be informed that you had to request one of those rooms especially when booking. ‘But how could I do that?’ I replied. ‘I didn’t book the room, On The Beach did.’

She sighed and told us it was the only room available. I didn’t believe her and asked again, and sure enough, magically, another room became available. This time, three floors up. With a slight trepidation, we traipsed after the concierge and peeped around the door to the new room.

Bath in middle of room – check

Amazing view – check

The view

Roof terrace and hot tub just across the corridor – check

An added bonus was the free wi-fi, which my iPhone immediately found, enabling me to keep in touch, tweet and access maps and information on Barclona.

‘We’ll take it,’ I said quickly before they gave it to someone else. And then the holiday really began.

I love Barcelona because, like London, it has easily identifiable districts, that are all within walking distance, although I think London Aunt would disagree…

After the fifth, ‘It’s just around the corner, I promise,’ she rolled her eyes and hailed a taxi.

We were staying in Eixample, which boasts three of Gaudi’s best-known buildings, La Pedrera, Casa Batló, and the formidable Sagrada Familia. But I will come to all them in a minute.

Exhaustion and hunger meant that Eixample was our chosen dining destination on the Friday night and we stumbled upon a little tapas bar tucked away down a side street, hams hanging from the ceiling and a smiley waiter ready to show us to our table.

Thirsty we requested wine and water – and keen to save money, as the Euro is still not fabulous, I asked him for tap water. He raised a worried eyebrow and scuttled away before returning with two glasses.

We thanked him, but he continued to hover nearby, before returning and snatching up the glasses before declaring, ‘I give you free water that won’t make you sick!’ and so he did from a bottle!

After a delicious dinner of crispy artichokes, obligatory patatas bravas, pork with Roquefort and Russian salad, we made our way to another bar and toasted my competition success and our fortune of being in Barcelona.

This meant that on Saturday morning, we woke up with heads as cloudy as the sky outside. Breakfast was a hilarious affair as no one, including us, knew our room number, on account of the move, and they kept trying to charge us for it, in spite of the fact breakfast was included.

We then went off to ‘do’ some Gaudi, and what a ‘do’ it was.

First stop was La Pedrera – a fabulous apartment block on the Passeo de Gracia. Here entrance costs a reasonable 10 euros and queuing is done with military precision.

La Pedrera

Then you are escorted up on to the roof where an amazing sight greets you – chimneys disguised as Darth Vadar, amazing flutes rising from the smooth tiled floor. Steps up, steps down and everything curved and undulating it’s way across the horizon. This is when I first discovered that Gaudi is for touching, and the best thing is, you can!

We spent about half an hour inspecting the master’s handiwork and squealing with delight at the sight of the Sagrada Familia before making our way down to one of the show apartments – the building is still lived in, so it’s not completely open to the public.

This apartment, apart from its vast size, was breathtaking also for its smooth lines, arched doorways, fabulous paintwork and incredible light – we later discovered that Gaudi was both obsessed with light and ventilation in his work.

It was a magical place, and I couldn’t help wishing that I lived there, too.

We then wandered our way to the next Gaudi house, Casa Batló, which is sometimes called the Dragon House as there appears to be a dragon on the roof, and it’s handily, just a few blocks down on the same street. At 17 euros to get in, it’s not cheap, but I can’t recommend it enough. It’s amazing!

Casa Batlo

On arrival you are given a audio guide, and immediately on my request I was handed a complete transcript of the whole thing especially for deaf people – English tourist destinations, take note! – and the tour began.

Entering Casa Batló is liking walking into the torso of a prehistoric animal. Scale-like paint effects adorn the walls and the curved wooden staircase takes on the form of a vertebrae. Everywhere you look there is something beautiful – the central staircase is tiled in shades of blue, giving the feeling that you are underwater. It was here that London Aunt took the most pictures.

Perhaps the most amazing bit however, was the top floor – this had been designed for the inhabitants of the apartments as storage and clothes-washing rooms. Clad in white plaster, it took on an almost dream-like quality and it was here I felt like I really saw what Gaudi had wanted to achieve. It gave me goose bumps and neither London Aunt or I wanted to leave.

But with stomachs rumbling we did, and went in search of food and did a spot of shopping…

The afternoon saw an adventure around the Barri Gotic – with its narrow streets, cathedral and tiny squares. I loved this area far more than Las Ramblas, the tourist trap, which we made a brief, but compulsory visit to.

Dinner that evening was in Taller de Tapas in Eixample, which features in the movie Vicky, Christina Barcelona and is just a stone’s throw from the Eurostars BCN Design. It’s a fabulous little restaurant that was packed to the rafters and has a great selection of, erm… good looking waiters and food of course.

After this, while our hearts told us to head to the Barri Gotic and check out Manu Chau’s bar, our feet told us to head to La Fira – a club in Eixample, decked out in fairground memorabilia and full of locals dancing the night away to a mad mix of Spanish and pop tunes. Black-Eyed Peas were played after some flamenco-sounding number and everyone was going mental.

It was great! And it seems the smoking ban has yet to reach this little venue – it was honestly like going back in time.

At 4am we emerged and I convinced London Aunt that our hotel was just around the corner, which it kind of was – around 20 minutes worth of corners!

So Sunday was quiet. After a quick read of a book on Barcelona,

we checked out the port – by taxi, the Barri Gotic again, by taxi and made our way back to the hotel to check out, by taxi – London Aunt had put a ban on my walking directions!!!!!

It was with sadness that I left Barcelona – I longed to stay a while longer in a hotel that was just a few yards away from Gaudi’s Caso Batló – a place that will stay etched in my mind forever.

It was a weekend of pure class, sophistication and… an eventful plane journey home.

*Blush…

…but that’s a whole other story!

Thanks Superdrug, I had a fab time!

Get the look – A simple yet Sultry and sexy look

1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars (11 votes, average: 3.55 out of 5)

I dont like to wear a lot of makeup so only have a few products, but id class them as fairly essential for a day or night look. Just vary the way in which you apply it to alter your look. Being a mum of 2 i also dont get time to spend ages infront of the mirror so most of my looks are very quick and simple….

Firstly moisturise the face for a smooth base

Apply Maxfactor colour adapt foundation in 70 natural and spread evenly

Apply Bourjois blusher in Rose D’or to the cheeks in an upward stroke for a glow

Line the lids of your eyes quite thickly with Maxfactor Masterpiece glide and define eyeliner in smoke flicking it out at the edges

Under the eyes line with Rimmel soft Kohl kajal eye pencil in jet black and smudge slightly for a smoky effect

Apply Maybelline volum express mascara in turbo black to the lashes and finish with adding Vaseline to the lipsMinimum effort, maximum effect
